What is it about a river and the serene flowing of the water. We spoke to some folks last night who live miles from the river but stop down regularly to simply sit and watch. They explained that they cherish the days they can sit and watch the boats go by, feed the flock of noisy ducks and otherwise enjoy the picturesque views into the hills of Kentucky. Our rivers serve as both sources of togetherness and divisiveness. As highways for the delivery of goods, the massive barges carry food and fuel for thousands of people in the US and abroad. Harking back to the US Civil War, the Ohio River served as a symbolic divider of the north and south and freedom and slavery. There is so much more to rivers and streams then the mere flowing of the water.
Because of such deep-rooted feelings about the flowing rivers, music has been a rich history of our rivers and streams. Countless songs have shared the stories of our majestic rivers throughout the US and the entire world. Stories of tragedy, romance, family and fun form the rich history of the mix of music and the water. The hope is that as this blog grows in readership we can share our favorite songs of the numerous rivers and streams throughout the US and the world. The plan is to take Thursdays to talk about music and the water. Please feel free to comment with some of you favorite songs of the water so as to allow others to enjoy also.
Here's a quick list of a few of my favorite river songs:

And a helluva portageur -
I like my bean soup good and hot,
My coffee strong and clear;
I roam the woods
And paddle the streams,
Of storms I have no fear -

Boat on the River - Styx
ReplyDeleteTake me down to my boat on the river
I need to go down, I need to come down
Take me back to my boat on the river
And I won't cry out any more
Time stands still as I gaze In her waters
She eases me down, touching me gently
With the waters that flow past my boat on the river
So I won't cry out anymore
Oh the river is deep
The river it touches my life like the waves on the sand
And all roads lead to Tranquillity Base
Where the frown on my face disappears
Take me back to my boat on the river
And I won't cry out anymore
Oh the river is wide
The river it touches my life like the waves on the sand
And all roads lead to Tranquillity Base
Where the frown on my face disappears
Take me back to my boat on the river
And I won't cry out anymore
And I won't cry out anymore
And I won't cry out anymore
Excellent choice and an old classic...We're always looking for more songs. Thanks for sharing
