The Ohio Kayak blog is all about the Ohio River region, the great outdoors and sharing stories of the river, streams, music and life (both past and present) on and near the water. We will continue to feature adventures, be it hiking, kayaking, food or music, that will get you outside of your home. So as we say at Ohio Kayak, "Get Outside and Play...." A little fresh air," exercise and "accidental education is a great recipe for success in life

"Pool stage" of Ohio River
The river remains at "pool stage" which should be great for paddling tonight. If only the Hurricane Isaac remnants will hold off.... This website pasted below is a great place to check the river stages and potential for flooding. NOAA projects out the river level based upon weather expected with the next 48 hours.

So looking forward to the holiday weekend. Still planning on participating in the "Blue Moon" float on the Ohio tomorrow night. Let's just hope that hurricane Isaac doesn't rain on our kayak parade.Hope to join everyone at the Green Kayak Market & Eatery after the float...Lots of barge traffic tonight on the Ohio. If you haven't seen these monsters crawl along the river then you are missing quite a sight. The average Ohio River barge is near 200 feet long and carry upwards of 1500 lbs of cargo. Use of barges on the Ohio dates back to the 18th century
Look what I saw this morning
I was down in New Richmond on the Ohio early this morning and saw Jacob. Jacob is the town mascot and quite a site. He travels all around town intermingling with the ducks and other river wildlife. Very cool!!!

Locking through dam
Was hoping to "lock" through the Meldahl dam this weekend. It looks like the weather will not cooperate. Not having "locked" through the dam in the past, it's a bit intimidating. Hard to believe that the river barges can lock through these massive structures....Any advice on this adventure is appreciated!!
Wednesday Late
Today was a great day on the river. Hoping that the weather holds out for a "Blue Moon" night kayak on the Ohio River on Friday night. We're expecting some backfall from Hurricane Isaac but the bad weather shouldn't hit until after 11 pm. With the moonrise at about 7:30 pm, we should have ample time to enjoy....
The modern meaning of "Blue Moon" is the second full moon in a calendar month. This definition has evolved over time, but the folklore of the rarity of the event is real...Still watchin' the barges crawl by the house....

Welcome to the Ohio Kayak blog
Welcome to our midwest River & Streams blog.....So many people believe you need to go to either coast to enjoy the water--WRONG!! Those few states in the heart of our County between New York and California have so much in the way of rivers, streams, lakes, camping, recreation and more. The hope is to develop a following of fun, energetic people willing to share their travels, stories of the road and water and life lessons.....Keep checking in....
